The majority of migrant monarchs (Danaus plexippus) from the eastern USA and south‐eastern Canada migrate to Mexico; however, some of them migrate to Cuba. Cuban migrants hatch in south‐east Canada and eastern USA, and then engage in a southern trip of 4000 km to this Caribbean island. In Cuba, these migrants encounter resident monarchs, which do not migrate, and instead move between plant patches looking for nectar, mating partners and host plants. These differences in flight behaviour between migrant and resident Cuban monarchs may have resulted in different selective pressures in the wing size and shape. Two modes of selection were tested, directional and stabilizing. In addition, wing condition was compared between these two groups. Monarchs were collected for 4 years in Cuba and classified as resident or migrant using two independent techniques: Thin‐layer chromatography and stable hydrogen and stable carbon isotope measurements. Wing size was measured and wing condition was rated in the butterflies. Fourier analysis and wing angular measurements were used to assess wing shape differences. Migrants have significantly longer wings than residents, thus supporting the action of directional selection on wing size. In addition, directional selection acts on wing shape; that is, migrant females differ significantly from resident females in their wing angles. However, the results do not support the action of stabilizing selection: there was no significant variance between migrant and resident monarchs in their wing size or shape. Also, migrant females and males differed in wing condition as a result of differences in flight behaviour. In conclusion, eastern North American monarchs offer a good opportunity to study the selective pressures of migration on wing morphology and how different migratory routes and behaviours are linked to wing morphology and condition. © 2007 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2007, 92 , 605–616.  相似文献

ABSTRACT. For long, our knowledge of the biology of ciliate pheromones has long relied solely upon the study of the two structurally unrelated "gamones" identified in culture filtrates of a Blepharisma species. However, the characterization of a number of polypeptide pheromones secreted by Euplotes raikovi and E. octocarinatus has now established that structural relationships of homology usually link these molecules, which is consistent with the genetic basis of the mating type systems evolved by these species. In this context, our growing appreciation of the conserved and variable elements of the pheromone architecture should foster progress in the understanding of pheromone-receptor interactions and thus, provide important clues into pheromone mechanisms of action.  相似文献

In the present work, a comparative molecular study of Ctenocephalides felis and Ctenocephalides canis isolated from dogs (Canis lupus familiaris) from different geographical regions (Spain, Iran and South Africa) was carried out. We found morphological variations in C. felis that do not correspond with molecular differences. The Internal Transcribed Spacers 1 and 2 (ITS1, ITS2) and 18S rRNA partial gene, and cytochrome c‐oxidase 1 (cox1) mtDNA partial gene sequences were determined to clarify the taxonomic status of these two species, and to assess interpopulation variation and interspecific sequence differences. In addition, a comparative phylogenetic study with other species of fleas using Bayesian, Maximum Parsimony and Maximum Likelihood analysis was performed. The 18S rRNA partial gene fragment was useful neither to discriminate C. canis and C. felis nor to infer phylogenetic relationships at this level, whereas ITS1 and ITS2 assessed for specific determination in the genus Ctenocephalides. The cox1 mtDNA sequences of C. felis revealed three main haplotypes and we suggest that there has been introgression of C. canis cox1 mtDNA into C. felis by Wolbachia pipientis. Based on cox1 sequences, restriction mapping identified many endonucleases that could be used to delineate different haplotypes of C. felis and to differentiate C. felis and C. canis.  相似文献

The Yellow-headed Parrot ( Amazona ochrocephala ) has a broad Neotropical distribution, ranging from Mexico to the Amazon Basin, and a history of complex taxonomy and controversial species limits. Recent molecular analyses have started to clarify the taxonomic arrangement of the complex, but have not included a representative geographical sampling from South America. These studies have shown that the Yellow-headed complex can be divided into three main lineages, and seems to be paraphyletic, due to the inclusion of the Blue-fronted Parrot ( Amazona aestiva ) that occurs in central South America. Here we present a phylogenetic analysis based on mitochondrial DNA sequences of 45 representatives of the Yellow-headed complex from South and Central America, plus 13 Blue-fronted individuals from different localities in South America. Our analyses recover the three primary lineages found previously in the Yellow-headed complex, show that there is genetic structure in the South American lineage, which can be divided into two well-supported, closely related clades, and demonstrate that Blue-fronted samples are distributed in both clades. Differentiation of South American Blue-fronted and Yellow-headed Parrot populations does not correspond to the plumage differences used to distinguish the Blue-fronted Parrot from the Yellow-headed Parrot, nor to plumage differences used to distinguish among South American Yellow-headed subspecies. This suggests that traditional taxonomy based on plumage characters needs revision, and that this may be an interesting example of ongoing divergence-with-gene-flow related to the forest/open area ecotone in southern Amazonia.  相似文献

Call degradation in diploid and tetraploid green toads   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
According to the 'environmental selection' hypothesis, the physical characteristics of environments influence the evolution of long-range acoustic signals by favouring those properties that decrease sound attenuation and distortion with distance. Different environments could favour different acoustic properties and therefore contribute to the intra- and interspecific variation of calls. In the present paper, we investigate whether this hypothesis could explain the differences between the advertisement calls of three taxa of central-Asian green toads: lowland diploids, highland tetraploids and lowland tetraploids. The pattern of propagation of 12 natural calls (four for each taxon) was analysed in nine localities of Kyrgyzstan and Kazakstan. We broadcast the calls and recorded them along a trasect at distances of 2, 4, 8, 16, and 32 m from the speaker, to estimate sound attenuation and propagation. Attenuation was quantified from the oscillogram (by directly calculating the SPL of calls) and from the power spectrum (by measuring the relative amplitude of the fundamental frequency) , whereas degradation was estimated by cross-correlating spectrograms of the same call at different distances. Results show that: (1) the pattern of sound propagation significantly differs among localities in relation to the different vegetation and environmental noise; (2) in most localities, call attenuation and degradation differ significantly among the three taxa ; (3) such differences are not consistent to those expected under the hypothesis of environmental selection: independent of altitude, lowland tetraploid calls fare worse than both diploid and highland tetraploid calls, whereas diploid and highland tetraploid calls show different patterns of propagation in a few localities only.  © 2003 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2003, 78 , 11–26.  相似文献
